The 1st Westbury Scout Group, UK is visiting Westbury, NY Boy Scout Troop 233 July 28-August 4, 2010. All of the activities are finished. We all had a great time!!
2010 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America. To help celebrate, scouts from Westbury, UK traveled to Westbury, NY. Cub Scout Pack 233 and Boy Scout Troop 233, sponsored by the Westbury United Methodist Church, 265 Asbury Avenue, hosted and planned activities for their visit.
The 1st Scout Group of Westbury, UK spent a week in the area visiting and sightseeing. Scouts in the UK are co-ed whereas in the US there are separate Boy Scout and Girl Scout organizations. The UK Scouts that visited ranged form 9 to 15 years plus 5 adult leaders.
The first day in town started with a visit and demonstration at Eisenhower Park with the Nassau County Mounted Police Unit. Lunch was next followed by a walking tour of Westbury: US Post Office, Westbury Fire Department, Westbury Village Hall, Westbury Children's Library, Westbury Friends Meeting House and Westbury United Methodist Church.
The second day was a visit to Sagamore Hill, hosted by Teddy Roosevelt himself (James Foote) and 5 Rough Riders. Teddy showed us his home, his famous porch where he gave speeches and showed us around the museum by the orchard.
The third day was a dinner celebrating the 100th anniversary and UK visit. It started with a patch swap where the UK and US scouts swapped emblems and patches. The dinner was a cover dish affair up to the high standards of the Westbury Scout hosts. Mmmm! Cake and desert then several presentations by scouts and local officials. Local groups and businesses pitched in.
The remaining activities were in Wading River at the scout camp and in NYC.
